Bro. Alfrederick Joyner | Lambda Eta Chapter


Alfrederick "Al" Joyner born January 19, 1960, in East St. Louis, IL is a former Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump, coach, and the husband of the late Florence Griffith Joyner. He is also the brother of six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

Joyner excelled at Arkansas State University, earning multiple NCAA All-American titles. In 1984, he became the first African American in 80 years to win Olympic gold in the triple jump and was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award. That same year, he and his sister became the first siblings to win medals at the same Olympics.

After marrying Griffith in 1987, Joyner coached her to three Olympic golds in 1988. Following her death in 1998, he focused on promoting her legacy, founding the Flo Jo Community Empowerment Foundation.

Inducted into multiple halls of fame, Joyner also contributed to SportsToday.com during the 2000 Olympics and coached athletes aiming for the U.S. Olympic team. He served as a coach at UCLA, led the U.S. Paralympic team to 16 medals in 2005, and became the full-time high-performance jumps coach for USATF/USOC in 2007. He continues to coach and mentor athletes today.

Hall of Fame Inductions: Arkansas State University Hall of Honor (1993), Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame (1997), and Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame (1999).
