Movember
The Movember initiative began in 2012, created by Bro. Maurice Gibbs of the Epsilon Psi Sigma Chapter in Las Vegas, NV, and Bro. Dr. Michael Baslee of the Phi Beta Sigma Chapter in Los Angeles, CA. What started as a regional program has since gained national support.
Men worldwide are facing a health crisis that is not being talked about. Our fathers, brothers, partners, and friends are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent. That’s why we’re taking action.
Our motivation is to use the power of the mustache and beard to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. This is Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Sigma Wellness programs in action.
The No Shave November/Movember Prostate Cancer Awareness drive is one of the key ways Sigma is contributing to this important cause. Originally led by the Western Region, the fundraiser has expanded to an international effort. During the most recent campaign, brothers from around the world shared photos of their growing beards on social media, accompanied by messages promoting men’s health and cancer prevention. These “Scruffy Sigmas,” along with fellow Greeks and friends, have helped shine a much-needed spotlight on the issue.
The primary goal of the “Movember” initiative has always been fundraising, and our impact continues to grow. We have steadily climbed the national rankings of this grassroots organization, raising over $23,000.00 since 2013. The drive has become an important part of the Sigma landscape and a key supporter of our Living Well: Brother to Brother. With the backing of the International Board and Brothers across the nation, the momentum is strong. Look forward to even greater accomplishments in the years ahead, and our heartfelt appreciation goes to everyone who has been the driving force behind this effort.

Each 1 Teach 1, launched in 2020, is an initiative created to provide meaningful mentorship opportunities for our Collegiate Brothers. Alumni Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., are encouraged to share their time, talent, and treasure with our future leaders—our greatest resource and the foundation of the Fraternity’s strength.
