STEM Challenge Competition

October 25, 2026, By PBSWest.org

The inaugural 2026 Western Region STEM Challenge showcased the innovation, talent, and leadership that continue to define our Brotherhood. Collegiate Brothers from across the region presented creative solutions to real-world challenges, demonstrating how STEM can be used to improve industries, strengthen communities, and shape the future. Congratulations to Gamma Rho Nu Chapter at the University of California, Riverside, on being named the 2026 Western Region STEM Challenge Champion. Gamma Rho Nu presented “The Smart Dock solution,” addressing warehouse receiving bottlenecks caused by labor-intensive manual inventory counting, operational inefficiencies, and workforce strain. Drawing extensively on the 2026 MHI Annual Industry Report, the team used industry statistics, documented workforce challenges and real world automation examples to establish the relevance and urgency of the problem earning them the opportunity to represent the Western Region at the Phi Beta Sigma International STEM Challenge during 2027 Conclave. Congratulations as well to Gamma Xi Chapter, at California State University Fresno whose FreshRoute solution addressed supply chain innovation, and Lambda Xi Chapter, Arizona State University whose project explored the use of artificial intelligence to better manage shared resources and spaces. Each team exemplified academic excellence, collaboration, and the spirit of Sigma.

This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of many Brothers who invested their time, expertise, and leadership. We extend our sincere appreciation to STEM Challenge Co-Chairs Bro. Dr. Young and Bro. Gittings, whose vision and countless hours of planning brought this inaugural competition to life. We also thank International Director of Education Bro. Dr. Rowe and International STEM Director Bro. Davis for their unwavering support and guidance throughout the initiative. Our gratitude also goes to our distinguished judges, chapter education directors, chapter advisors, and every Brother who contributed to making the evening a tremendous success. The STEM competition marked the beginning of a long-term investment in the future of the Western Region. By creating opportunities for our collegiate Brothers to solve complex problems, think critically, and compete on an international stage, we are strengthening a pipeline of innovators, engineers, entrepreneurs, and servant leaders who will continue to embody the ideals of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The future is bright, and this inaugural STEM Challenge is only the first step in what promises to become a signature educational initiative for our region.
